Escrow

Provides (in)tangible online escrow

Caveat Emptor

Caveat Emptor means "let the buyer beware" in Latin. Knowledge is your best weapon against potential Internet fraud. We highly recommend that you think twice before making an online purchase, especially a big ticket item. We want to increase your awareness and in turn, minimize risk. Before statutory law, the buyer had no warranty of the quality of goods. In many jurisdictions, the law now requires that goods must be of "merchantable quality". However, this implied warranty can be difficult to enforce, and may not apply to all products. Hence, buyers are still advised to be cautious.

In addition to the quality of the merchandise, this phrase also applies to the return policy. In most jurisdictions, there is no legal requirement for the vendor to provide a refund or exchange. In many cases, the vendor will not provide a refund but will provide a credit. In the case of software, movies and other copyrighted material many vendors will only do a direct exchange for another copy of the exact same title. Most stores require proof of purchase and impose time limits on exchanges or refunds; however, some larger store chains will do exchanges or refunds at any time with or without proof of purchase.

Escrow can be a very interesting option in such online big ticket transactions. However, be careful. We suggest the following:

  • Check url http://www.afterson.com or http://afterson.com in your browser. It should send you to our site. All our main navigation hyperlinks within our site start with https://www.AFTERSON.com/...

  • Consumer Alert! ads in city newspapers online classifieds such as Houston Chronicle or LA times or autotrader regarding vehicles such as too good to be true prices on car or truck with plausible story such as, we just moved to the UK or recent job transfer or so happens a party lives in the UK and that our reputable name Afterson.com will handle the transaction or you received a phishing email and/or pdf letter head with our header. Even if VIN checks out because they have access to VIN and automobile information. This is a scheme. First, we do not initiate transactions. We do NOT have an ongoing transaction regarding vehicle located in the UK. Here, all communications are exchanged within our site's sign in functionality. We only send out notification emails. They will probably provide you with a toll-free number or bogus name and number or say that they just moved their offices and lines are down for a few days. Never send funds through moneygram or western union. This is NOT a payment option. These payments are NOT traceable. Legitimate escrow will NEVER ask such a payment. Please record all information such as ad's url, emails and report any suspicious activity to https://tips.fbi.gov

  • Craigslist.org provides a great venue to post classifieds, forums. However, they strongly suggest users to trade locally. Good intentions on their part but a bit unrealistic in the long run, espicially in a global economy with worlwide city to city appeal.
  • Afterson.com does not ask account information, transaction details by email. Watch out for phishing emails. An imposture can create an email with our name as the header.
  • Look out for spoof websites. Any website's content such as text and images can be copied or doctored. The URL is one of the most reliable elements when surfing the Internet.
  • Make sure Godaddy certification seal when clicked opens another secure window with the godaddy.com url. Same goes for the BBB seal. It opens into another window when clicked. It must contain the bbbonline.org url. All information must check out with another third party.

  • Verify incorporation documentation with governmental agencies.

  • Other company logos on a website must have their permisson. Please do your homework.

  • A reputable company will have contact information such as phone, email, address. They must all be verifiable and match third party information.

  • Be careful for fake escrow and the real McCoy, the latter is the one that you should trust.

  • Be well aware that a computer can have spyware and record every keystroke, so please update and launch your anti-spyware regularly
